Chocolate cake is a rich, decadent treat that’s a favorite for chocolate lovers. This classic dessert can be made in various styles, from fudgy and dense to light and fluffy, with plenty of options for fillings and frostings. Here’s a recipe for a moist chocolate cake with a chocolate buttercream frosting.

Ingredients

For the Cake:
• 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
• ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
• 2 cups granulated sugar
• 1 ½ tsp baking powder
• 1 ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 tsp salt
• 2 large eggs, at room temperature
• 1 cup whole milk
• ½ cup vegetable oil
• 2 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 cup boiling water (for added richness, you can use hot coffee instead)
For the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting:
• 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
• 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
• ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
• 1/3 cup heavy cream or milk
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• A pinch of salt (to taste)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cake Batter:
• Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
• In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
• Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed until smooth and creamy.
• Carefully stir in the boiling water (or hot coffee). The batter will be thin, which helps create a moist cake.
2. Bake the Cake:
• Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
• Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
• Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
3. Make the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting:
• In a large bowl, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing well.
• Add the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt. Beat on high speed until the frosting is smooth and fluffy. Adjust the consistency with more cream if needed.
4. Assemble the Cake:
• Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top.
• Place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake.
• Decorate as desired, with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or a drizzle of chocolate ganache.
